Chicken License

The Common Council adopted an ordinance in October of 2018 that allows for the keeping of chickens. The adopted Ordinance addresses licensing and regulates the keeping of chickens in the City of Verona. Components of the ordinance include the following: 

  • If the property is not owner occupied (i.e. rented), the applicant shall provide the owner's written consent to the keeping and raising of chickens.
  • No more than four (4) female chickens may be kept on a property less than 1-acre, no more than eight (8) female chickens may be kept on a property more than 1-acre, and must have a chicken license.
  • Roosters are prohibited.
  • The sale of chickens, meat, and eggs are prohibited as is the slaughtering.
  • Chickens shall be kept in the chicken coop or chicken run at all times on the licensed property.
  • The chicken coop shall only be located in rear yards and be setback a minimum of 15 feet from all property lines.
  • Written notification shall be provided to all property owners within 25 feet by the applicant stating they intend to keep chickens prior to obtaining a license.
  • Prior to applying for a chicken-keeping license, the applicant shall provide proof of livestock premises registration with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
